FMN: Farewell to Thragtusk
I had a mission for FNM: to make a deck which used Angelic Accord to good effect. This is the last Standard FNM before rotation. I knew this deck wouldn't be able to actually come in first, but I hoped to finish top half. The deck:
4 Angelic Accord
2 Archangel of Thune
1 Bladed Bracers
2 Brindle Boar
2 Bubbling Cauldron
1 Elixir of Immortality
1 Fiend Hunter
1 Fiendslayer Paladin
4 Oblivion Ring
2 Restoration Angel
4 Rhox Faithmender
1 Scavenging Ooze
2 Selesnya Charm
1 Seraph of Dawn
4 Thragtusk
1 Trostani, Selesnya's Voice
2 Voice of Resurgence
2 Voracious Worm

6 Forest
2 Gavony Township
9 Plains
3 Sunpetal Grove
4 Temple Garden

Sideboard:
2 Frontline Medic
2 Pithing Needle
1 Ray of Revelation
2 Rest in Peace
2 Riot Control
1 Selesnya Charm
1 Sigarda, Host of Herons
2 Solemn Offering
2 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben

Match 1, Joe Brown was piloting a very fast mono red aggro. I lost the roll and he had a good draw game 1 -- and it pretty much didn't matter what I had, he was going to win. Game 2, he had a poor draw and I managed to grind him down. Game 3, again on the draw, I had to mull to 5 and got crushed. 0-1. Match 2, Brandon Heller was playing a Simic brew built around playing a lot of walls and winning with Infinite Reflection on Biovicionary. Game 1, I mulled to 5 and he to 6, and we both did nothing for a long time, I had a ton of life and nearly killed him when he pulled the combo out. Game 2, I got him fairly handily, but we were out of time -- we just drew hands for game 3, I had to mull with 30 seconds to go, didn't even play any cards. 0-1-1. Game 3, Matt Shilts had a R/B aggro deck that wasn't quite the beast that Joe had game 1. I won game 1 handily. Game 2 he got out faster, I almost managed to stabilize, but not quite. Won game 3 easily, 1-1-1. Match 4, David Cimino had a naya aggro deck. Game 1, I got an Archangel on line, gaining enough life to stay alive and then smashed him. Game 2, I got mashed by a Thundermaw Hellkite. Game 3 was a long game with a complicated messy board. He had two Thundermaw Hellkites; I had Angelic Accord on line. I believe he would have had me at one point if he'd used his Domri to fight his Loxodon Smiter into one of my Angel tokens, so that I couldn't double block his Thundermaw -- but he didn't see it. I managed to hold him off and go to time, though my lack of ability to draw Selesnya Charms for his Hellkites meant that I couldn't win. 1-1-2. Round 5, Alexander Frankhauser was playing W/B exalted. Game 1, he got a Nefarox on line and I never saw any removal; I had a lot of things to sac but he killed me in a few turns. Game 2, I had some removal and life gain to win. Game 3, the final game of the night, if I win this game I succeed in being top half -- so I draw total crap, total crap, a mediocre 5 card hand; I start to get some stuff on line but I'm at least a turn too slow, so I end up 1-2-2. My door prize was yet another promo Breaking // Entering. No afterdraft.

For the record, I'll record the awful pile I played last week in Modern. I threw the thing together slightly after the last minute -- I wasn't done until about 6:40, but it started late. Deck:
4 Blightning
4 Bloodchief Ascension
4 Browbeat
2 Burst Lightning
4 Faithless Looting
1 Furnace of Rath
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Pyromancer Ascension
4 Rift Bolt
2 Vexing Devil
4 Volt Charge

4 Blood Crypt
4 Dragonskull Summit
1 Graven Cairns
5 Mountain
4 Sulfurous Springs
5 Swamp

Sideboard:
2 Nihil Spellbomb
2 Skullcrack
2 Sowing Salt
2 Tormod's Crypt

This deck was wretched. I lost the first 4 rounds, the first 3 without winning a game, finally won round 5. Bloodchief Ascension is really powerful when it gets online, but this incarnation was way too slow to make it work. I totally didn't think to put in any pyroclasm effects, which would give it a chance against goblins, which were all over the place that night. I think the Pyromancer Ascension is too slow in a deck without canrips. And Faithless Looting is just bad.
