Magic: Abzan wins some, loses some
I played Standard at FNM last night and then at a Grand Prix trial today. I was playing mostly the same deck, but I tweaked it a bit after last night, and I can't remember exactly what I changed between FNM and the tourney.

I'll give the event today first, because I have the decklist. The event was a disaster for the store -- only 11 people showed up, but the advertised prizes still ahd to be given to the top 8. It wasn't much better for me -- I ended up 1-2-1, with bad tiebreaks, which was 9th place.

1 Abzan Falconer
1 Anafenza, the Foremost
4 Courser of Kruphix

2 Wingmate Roc

3 Abzan Charm
1 Ajani, Mentor of Heroes
1 Ajani Steadfast
2 Banishing Light
1 Drown in Sorrow
1 Elspeth, Sun's Champion

1 Whip of Erebos

2 Evolving Wilds
1 Llanowar Wastes
2 Mana Confluence
2 Sandsteppe Citadel
2 Temple of Malady
2 Temple of Plenty
2 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
2 Windswept Heath
4 Forest
3 Plains
2 Swamp

Side:
2 Bile Blight
2 Deicide
1 Drown in Sorrow
1 Erase
2 Glare of Heresy
1 Hero's Downfall
1 Murderous Cut
3 Thoughtseize
1 Tormod's Crypt
1 Whip of Erebos

Round 1, I faced Lucien (whose last name I don't know, and we didn't have posted pairings or standings because there were so few players). He was playing U/W Heroic. Game 1, he played a Hero of Iroas turn 2, then put two Ordeal of Thassa on it turn 2 and swung for 6. On my turn, I tried to hit it with Banishing Light and he saved it with Gods Willing. He swung again. I untapped and played Utter End. He had a second Gods Willing, and that was it. Then game 2, I didn't even get to play -- I mulled a bad 7 card hand and got nothing at all, eventually going down to 4. I hit his turn 2 Hero of Iroas with Last Breath, and fought for a while, but being down 3 cards was too much. 0-1. Round 2, I faced Peter, the sourge of drafts (whose last name I forget, see above). He was playing U/B Ashiok. Game 1, he had too much removal, I couldn't keep a creature on the table, and he milled me out with Ashiok. Game 2, I had to mull to a crummy 5 card hand, he got an early Ashiok, and he had all the counterspells and card draw. 0-2. Round 3, I got the bye. Round 4, I was paired with Phil Olivarez, playing Temur monsters. Game 1, he beat me down with little creatures. I sided in a second Drown in Sorrow, but I failed to bring in the sideboard answers to Stormbreath Dragon. I won round 2 handily, but round 3 he had tons of creatures. I was able to maintain parity for a couple of turns because I had a Whip, but then he got a Reclamation Sage, and I figured I was dead. He played a Stormbreath, but he kept it back to block my Siege Rhinos. Because he wasn't aggressive enough, we went to time, but his tiebreaks were better than mine, so I didn't make the cut.

I had done much better last night. Round 1 I faced Lance McGuiness with a R/G Monsters deck. Lifelink and control came through and I won 2-0. Round 2 I played someone I didn't know named Niel (didn't get his last name). Game 1, I mulled to 6 but did well; game 2 I mulled to 5 and got walked over, then Game 3 I came back and won. Round 3, I faced Chris Manrique borrowing Carl's Jeskai Tokens deck. He smacked me game 1. Game 2, he got me down to 1 and then I came back with a ton of lifelink. Game 3, my control held him down and I crushed him, so I won FNM. I got a full art Pain Seer, a foil Eidolon of Blossoms, the FNM card, and 5 packs.

My deck Friday night had Brimaz instead of the 4th rhino, one more forest and one less swamp (getting to double black to be able to cast Drown in Sorrow was really hard, and one game I didn't have a swamp to fetch with Evolving Wilds, so I'm sure that's the right), and I think I changed a couple of other cards. Despite the fact that I did much worse, I think my deck was better for the changes.
