We can't sentence someone to die unless we're absolutely sure they are guilty. I don't dispute that; what I dispute is that it is OK to "only" deprive them of their freedom and the right to live the lives they choose even if we are less sure.
To imprison someone for life is to take away everything that execution takes away. It's pretty much equivalent, ethically. If we aren't sure enough that someone is guilty to execute him, we should not be taking away his freedom at all.
