Things to do in Vegas
I am probably going to Las Vegas around July 31 for the FCF Convention. The reason I post this now is to see if anyone who reads my journal would care to suggest some things that I might want to take an extra day or two in the area to do. I'm not interested in gambling, and I'm not very interested in shows or tourist stuff in the city; what I really want to know about is things that I could get to within reasonable distance of the city (presumably with a rental car).

So, what do you think I'd be foolish to miss while I'm there?

i think Hoover Dam isn't too terribly far of a drive from there (i could be mistaken on that, however...it might be Really Far)

i know people often take day-trips to california from vegas. (And vice versa)

and i also know that you can rent a motorcycle and drive around the desert outside vegas, but i've no idea where exactly those sorts of rentals take place.

while gambling might not be your thing, walking up and down the strip gets you free street-shows and like that. (Although it might be too touristy for your tastes.)

There is also Laughlin, Nevada. Which is a frightfully old gambling town which has managed to stay off the tourist radar. All the casinos are joined together along the river. If you do decide to try and put a coin in a slot machine, i would recommend Laughlin. And if you just want to walk around an old-west town, i would also recommend Laughlin as the nearest within driving distance. We spent an hour just walking up and down the boarwalk outside the casinos.

And just as a warning, all the casinos and their hotels are specifically designed for you to lose track of time. Bring a travel clock and a watch if it might be important for you to be somewhere at a certain time.

If "The Hungarian" means who I think it means, I might consider buying him a drink, but would I actually find him in Vegas?

Steven lives in vegas now - his email is on his web page - I'll send him a heads up that you might drop him an email

Gleep! I'm just a random fan; while I've been in the same room with him a time or two, I don't think we've ever spoken. I do like his work (literary and musical), and if I actually met him at a con, I'd tell him so, but I don't feel like I have enough to say to actually justify contacting him and arranging to meet him somewhere.
