Check out http://www.junglecatworld.com/
(about an hour and a half east of Toronto, the wrong direction in other words) and http://www.torontozoo.com/
. Both are year-round. Given your background, either might let you behind the scenes with some advance notice. Both are well beyond the "roadside zoo" kind where no one actually cares about the animals.
I doubt we have camera equipment here in advance of what you would see in Michigan. I can give you the name of the store in downtown Toronto I buy at if you want, but driving downtown on a weekday is no fun.
March is not a good time for hiking - too late for reliable snow and too early for spring growth. Mud is likely. However, Rattlesnake Point might be worthwhile for the views and the likely birds of prey which fly past (not overhead but same level).
You might want to check on the timing for birds going by Point Pelee. It is a top birdwatching spot; this might be a little early.
