Lori update
I haven't written anything about how my dog is doing, so I should give an update.

In brief, she's doing about as well as can be expected.  She's still weak and not moving very fast, but she doesn't seem to be in pain or miserable.  For a few days she was not keeping food down; Dr. Lacoste says this is a fairly normal reaction to starting chemo, but I was worried that it meant she wasn't getting her medicine either.  But she's been eating with normal Lori-ish enthusiasm the last few days.  Also, it's gotten much colder than it was a week ago, and she's decided, reasonably, that she'd rather lie on the couch than outside.  I think this is a good choice, but it does make things a little awkward in that she doesn't seem to be able to hold her urine for as many hours as I sometimes need to be gone.

She went in for a checkup yesterday, and the doctor says that the swelling in her lymph nodes is almost gone, which is good, but her blood work shows she's still anemic.  We'll be continuing her treatment as we'd planned; she goes in for another chemo shot and checkup on Dec. 29.

Handyman Phil 3: The search for space
A few weeks ago, I got the notion that I could improve the organization of my bedroom if I had some hooks in a convenient location to hang clothes that I had worn recently and planned to wear again soon, and I decided that if I could get one of the combination knick-knack shelf and hooks kits, I could solve that problem and also have a place to put some other things.

Since I was at Lowe's looking for something else anyway on Wednesday, I decided to find one of these kits that I thought I remembered from a previous trip.  Unfortunately, they didn't actually have what I wanted.  The only kits that combined a hook board and a shelf were in one case too small and in another, both too big and pre-painted white.  I ended up getting a kit that was pretty much the shelf I wanted and separately some hooks that were more or less what I was looking for and a board to attach them to.

This afternoon, I managed to install the shelf and hooks reasonably successfully:

Is Christmas muzak always this tacky?
On Wednesday I had to do some shopping.  Thanks to being unemployed, I was able to do it during the day on a weekday so the stores weren't too crowded, but I was unable to avoid the sounds coming from the store PA systems.  And what I heard certainly wasn't well chosen to put *me* in a good mood.  It seemed as though, for fear of offending someone, the only things they were willing to play that actually had lyrics were insipid versions of some of the usual insipid songs about the supposedly appropriate weather for Christmas, like "Let It Snow" and "White Christmas".  These were interspersed with music-only versions of familiar Christmas carols with words that say something, but the fact that they weren't willing to play versions that included the lyrics just underscored the bland ickiness of the whole thing.

I know Christmas Muzak has always been bad, but it seems more painful than I remember this year.  Is it just me, or has it really gotten worse?
