This book always brings back fond memories for me. I was perhaps 8 years old and a regular visitor to the local library (Thanks Mom!). I remember telling my favorite librarian that I was getting kind of bored with what we were reading in school. I grew up in a house where we read together every night, so I learned to love reading at a very young age but often found what we were assigned for school to be less interesting that what we read at home.

She handed me a copy of The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. It was the first of many fantasy and then SciFi books that I read (and still read).

I think the Dark is Rising was the next series that I read (after all the Narnia books). :)

I haven't thought about that librarian in some time, thanks! :)

I've never read The Dark Is Rising, but I love the song* so much I will buy it and read it if I find it for sale.

*(I believe the poem is in the books. The words are credited to Susan Cooper. It has the chorus "When the dark is rising, six shall turn it back / Three from the circle, three from the track / Wood, bronze, iron, water, fire, stone, / Five will return and one go alone.") It was set to music by Julia Ecklar; there might be a recording on line.)
