Virtual Mats
I was poking around the Internet and I found this software that does "virtual mats" -- extending a photo around all four sides with something that looks like a mat.

For you folks who have seen my framed prints -- is this a cheesy concept I should steer clear of, or a clever way to make home-printed images more attractive?

Personally, I don't think I would do it for a framed print. If you were making some blank photo-cards, post-cards, business cards, a printed calendar, or something else like that, some of the more subtle ones might be nice. I suppose that some of these could work for scrapbooking projects. :)

I don't know about the cheesiness factor (one of the features was interesting) but I really like being able to pick my own matting/framing when I buy prints/photos/paintings/etc.
