Phil's Rambling Rants
New Cameras Announced (Danger, Will Robinson!)|
And before the ink is even dry on the press releases, Nikon has fired back with announcements of two impressive models. The D3 is Nikon's first full-frame DSLR. It's a little low on pixels for a full-frame camera (at least from my point of view as a telephoto kind of guy), but it claims absolutely amazing light sensitivity -- native ISO 6400, two full stops better than Canon, and synthesized another two stops, for a mind-boggling ISO 25600. Even 6400 means ambient light photos in almost any situation where you can see, and 25600 is like night-vision goggles. We'll have to wait until November for reports on how noisy it is. And the D300 carries most of the features of the D3 to an APS-C sensor and a $2000 price point. The specs they claim on these cameras make me think I'm backing the wrong horse being a Canon guy. But I will still be very happy to get my mitts on a Canon 40D. And as long as Nikon and Canon keep fighting, they'll both keep coming out with better cameras.
