FNM report

I didn't play much magic in November; I missed 3 FNMs in a row going to cons. So my deck, which seemed good at the beginning of the month, apparently got stale. It's almost the same as it was last time, but it underperformed this week.

Here's the deck, noting what changed from last time:
1 Armada Wurm
3 Doomed Traveler
2 Geist of St. Traft
2 Thragtusk
2 Trostani, Selesnya's Voice - +1
0 Wayfaring Temple - -1
2 Call of the Conclave
3 Lingering Souls
4 Intangible Virtue
1 Parallel Lives
2 Rootborn Defenses
2 Sorin, Lord of Innistrad
2 Detention Sphere
2 Oblivion Ring - -1
2 Selesnya Charm - +1
1 Sundering Growth
1 Switcheroo
1 Tragic Slip
3 Chromatic Lantern
2 Farseek
2 Glacial Fortress
1 Grove of the Guardian
3 Hallowed Fountain - +1
1 Hinterland Harbor - +1
0 Island - -2
2 Isolated Chapel - -1
1 Moorland Haunt
2 Overgrown Tomb - +1
0 Plains - -1
4 Temple Garden
1 Transguild Promenade
3 Vault of the Archangel

and the sideboard:
2 Druid's Deliverance
2 Elixir of Immortality
1 Knight of Glory - +1
1 Oblivion Ring - +1
3 Rest in Peace
1 Selesnya Charm - -1
1 Sever the Bloodline
1 Sundering Growth
1 Supereme Verdict
1 Tormod's Crypt
1 Witchbane Orb - -1

I swapped the second Trostani for Wayfaring Temple because I got the second Trostani, and I hadn't seen the Temple do especially well. I swapped the main deck O ring for the sideboard Selesnya Charm because it seemed like a better way to go. And I fiddeld with the land because I picked up the additional shock lands and I realized that I could achieve the holy grail of no basic lands. Of course, having done it, I realize that I'd really be hurt by Ghost Quarter, so maybe I should put a couple basics back in -- even though nobody seems to be running Ghost Quarter right now, they should be, because Vault of the Archangel is so freaking good.

Match 1, Todd Davis was playing G/W humans. It seems like a strong deck. Game 1 he kept a 1 lander with 3 Champion of the Parish, and it didn't work out for him.Game 2 he got a ton of damage with Silverblade Paladin and two Rancors, and I didn't get lucky enough drawing removal. Game 3, I played Intangible Virtue on turn 2, Geist of St. Traft on turn 3, turn 4 he blocked with a 2/2 and I hit it with Selesnya Charm so the Geist survived to hit him a second time, and that got him down far enough that he couldn't hold off my other threats.

Match 2, Josh Stepp had a U/W Spirit deck using Favorable Winds. Game 1 was long and complicated, I gained a ton of life with Vault; he did over 50 damage but I got him. Game 2 I mulled to 5 and was losing as time was getting short, so I resigned hoping for a better draw. Game 3 was setting up to be complicated again. I thought hard over which trick to play and then tapped the wrong mana, leaving me with a spell in hand that I didn't have the right colors to cast, and I lost two turns later -- I think if I'd played it right I would have had the game.

Match 3, Josh Hanson had a red, white, and blue control deck. I won game 1, then game 2 got long and complicated, but eventually he beat me down with a Restoration Angel just as time ran out, 1-1-0.

Match 4, Matt Curry was playing a Bant Control deck that held me off until he could use Sphinx's Revelation for overwhelming card advantage.

I thought we would be going 5 rounds -- we had 22 players -- but they handed out prizes at this point, and since I wasn't going to win one anyway I wasn't that upset. I won a spindown die in the lottery, though, which made me feel really unlucky because there were so many good prizes there.

I stayed for afterdraft, and the curse of draft hit me again -- I thought I'd drafted a kick ass deck, so of course I drew nothing out of it and lost the first round. I came back and won the second round convincingly, and my third round opponent dropped. I waited around an hour, and ended up coming in 3rd, so I got just one pack, but it was a Scourge pack, the first unopened pack from that set I've ever held, because the people who placed ahead of me unexpectedly took things I didn't want.
