Shit.
Prairie City Computing is going out of business, and all of its employees, including me, are officially laid off as of today.  A severance package that basically covers pay and health care through January helps a little to soften the blow, but I have a big big problem on my hands.

I will be writing more shortly.  Anyone who has useful advice about possible local opportunities to make a living, please get in touch with me in person, by email, or through LJ.

Yes, probably; I haven't written a serious I-want-to-be-hired resume in over a decade and I don't think it works quite the same any more. But right now, I have to seriously consider what I'm really looking for.

Crap. That makes another person in the unemployment line. Grab a chair; I'll pour you a cup of coffee, tea, cocoa, or your favorite hot beverage.

For the last several months, I've been writing the Java client front-end to a C++/SQL database server for a system that collects data and generates reports on kid's physical fitness.

Before that, I was doing MFC programming for various custom Windows apps, most recently a package of water quality data data management and graph drawing tools called Aq*QA (where the * is actually a big dot, but I don't feel like trying to figure out how to tell LJ to display that). If you're curious, you can look at the product web site. Aq*QA is in commercial release, but it hasn't exactly been flying off the shelves.

Yuck! Hope you're able to find a job that fits. Lousy timing, but I guess there's never a "good" time to get news like this, unless you've just won the lottery.
