That was my favorite quote about guacamole until I read this.

For those of you playing the home game, the PLATO system 20+ years ago was an amazing mishmosh of software, written by many different people over a long time, only a few of whom had any training in or understanding of traditional programming. Although the whole was an impressive achievement, many of the individual pieces were very bad, especially if you had to look at the code rather than just the screen displays. The main system-provided student management system at the time was one of the very worst monstrosities of bad design and bad coding in the mix. It was called "mrouter".

On one occasion when we were eating at Trito's -- a place that would have been the absolutely perfect student dive except for being a little too expensive; they've been closed for close to 20 years and I still miss their grinders -- I forgot to specify "no guacamole" with my nachos supreme, and Chris made the above remark when he saw the container of guacamole.

Yeah, I remember "mrouter". I've now blanked on the name of the woman who wrote it, but I worked over her spaghetti code for the Chemistry department first. As I recall, "mrouter" was one of the reasons they worried about hiring me to work on PLATO, because of the last programmer/chemist they'd dealt with. *sigh*

my brain has monica fortner associated with it -- but did she write it, or did she just document it?

No, she didn't come out of Chemistry, so she must have just documented it. Ah, but Google is my friend. It was Ruth Chabay, who finished her Ph.D. in 1975.

And this has just got to be her, since she's working with Bruce Sherwood.

Get over it. You don't have to drive past the building every few days.
